Salary Range: $21.53 - $23.55

General Purpose :

Under the general supervision of the Fleet Manager and  is responsible for being able to professionally do automotive service repairs while ensuring high customer satisfaction levels are achieved. The Tech may perform tire and wheel related services, change automotive fluids, and maintain cleaning and maintenance in the service department, exterior of building and tire racks. As well as, i nspects, diagnoses and makes major and minor mechanical repairs to all types of city vehicles and equipment including field repairs.  Performs preventive maintenance inspections and corrects deficiencies.  This is a safety sensitive position and is subject to random drug testing. Safety sensitive positions must comply to federal regulations where marijuana still remains illegal. Possession of a medical marijuana license does not exempt safety sensitive positions from federal regulations. Should one of these safety sensitive positions test positive on a drug test and lose the ability to perform within the job description outline, the City of Claremore will implement the zero tolerance policy resulting in immediate termination.

Essential Functions:

• Services vehicles and equipment; changes oil and filters and performs preventative and scheduled maintenance and safety inspections.
• Inspects, diagnoses and makes repairs to gas and diesel engines and such mechanical equipment as passenger vehicles, emergency vehicles, power shovels, graders, dozers, heavy trucks and accessories, loaders, rollers, and all other equipment used in highway maintenance and construction.
• Topping off all fluids in vehicle.
• Completing vehicle inspections.
• Light repairs.
• Checks ignition systems, performs tune-ups, makes specific adjustments, and repairs electronic ignition systems.
• Replaces injectors and fuel pump and reassembles to specifications.
• Fabricates small parts as necessary.
• Maintains written records of repair and servicing of vehicles and equipment.
• Checks and repairs transmission, including torque convertors, and automatic transmissions.
• Pulls wheels and replaces or repacks wheel bearings and re-faces or replaces drums; replaces brake lining and shoes; repairs air cans and checks systems for leaks; repairs air compressors, air governors, and Jake brakes; repairs and replaces tires; rotate tires.
• Operates such shop equipment as grinders, vacuum gauge, voltage and regulator tester, wheel balancer, drill press, wheel pullers, jacks, air tools, scope dwell meter, timing light and various hand tools and other equipment used in automotive and mechanical repairs.
• Uses engine diagnostic computer.
• Designs, modifies and installs hydraulic systems and other special accessories to the equipment on hand.
• Maintains written records of repair and servicing of vehicles and equipment.
• Does machinist, welder or blacksmith work as assigned; may assist in specialized work such as body repair.
• Road tests vehicles after repair.
• Performs all other duties as assigned.
• Obtain 15-21 certifications; of these the Tech III shall obtain certifications as assigned by the Fleet Manager.

Minimum Qualifications:

• High School Education or equivalent. Familiarity with basic automotive repair and maintenance. Valid driver’s license and a good driving record. Manual dexterity. Ability to walk or stand for extended periods of time. Ability to perform repetitive motions. Ability to lift up to 60 pounds several times a day. Ability to occasionally stoop, kneel, crouch, reach and crawl. Able to be exposed to weather, noise, vibration, dust, exhaust fumes, and a variety of other hazardous and non-hazardous materials.  Knowledge of gas and diesel engines, transmissions, hydraulics, and related shop techniques. Knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of the mechanical trade. Knowledge of the principles and methods of vehicle and heavy equipment repair and maintenance. Skill in the operation of equipment and tools used in testing and repair of vehicles and heavy equipment. Ability to accurately diagnose and repair major and minor mechanical and electrical defects in vehicles and heavy equipment. Ability to prioritize and organize work assignments. Ability to follow oral and written instructions and keep accurate records. Ability to physically perform assigned duties. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees.
• Knowledge of D.O.T. regulations. Specialized training in automotive and/or heavy equipment systems repair and three years of experience in vehicle and/or equipment mechanical repair; or any combination of education and experience which would provide the applicant with the desired skills, knowledge and ability required to perform the job.  Two years of experience as a technician’s helper or apprentice in an automobile dealership or service environment preferred. Obtain EVT Master Certification.

Pickup, Dump Truck, Man Lift (bucket truck), Digger Derrick, Backhoe, Chipper, Sanitation Trucks, Plow Trucks, Asphalt Machines Mowers, Gators, Firetrucks, Police Cars Power Tools, Hydraulic Tools, Air Tools, Tampers, Grinders, Not Limited to Just These.

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms. The employee frequently is required to stand and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to walk; sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and smell. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Employee must not have a fear of heights. Must pass a physical examination at a facility designated by the City of Claremore. Must be able to wear the appropriate protective clothing/gear to complete assigned tasks. Must be willing to remove all jewelry, including wedding ring, while in the performance of job duties. Must be able to communicate and receive verbal instructions at distances of up to 75 feet due to working on bucket trucks and having to communicate form air to ground to other mechanic(s).   Subject to call back for emergency repairs

Work Environment:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts or in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to offensive smells, dust, dirt and water, wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, traffic, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, and vibration; works around hazardous equipment.  Must observe safety concerns and assist other repairers to be working in safe environments. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate with the potential to be excessive.
